The ships were often driven ashore and wrecked on the treacherous Cornish coastline or torpedoed by the German U-Boats that patrolled this area during the First World War.
Once the copper has been recovered from the seabed using SCUBA diving equipment, it then has to be declared to the H.M. Receiver of Wreck who tries to find the legal owner of the shipwreck. If no owner can be found, the item is then awarded to the finder in lieu of salvage.
The marine copper has a very unique texture and patina, the sculptures are created emphasising this and the original marine growth and verdigris is incorporated into its design.
